Obituary

Mr. William David Tompkins was born October 12, 1935 in Reidsville, N.C., the son of Malachi Willie and Jessiena Raiford Tompkins. He was a member of First Christian Church and later, Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, in Reidsville.

From 1955 to 1958, William served in the Army of the United States. Afterwards, he served as a correctional officer and sergeant at the N.C. Department of Correction, Rockingham Correctional Center for 32 years. He married the love of his life Marian Evonne in 1962, they had two daughters, and began a journey of unconditional love and companionship that lasted for 51 years, until Marian's transition to Heaven in March 2013.

William was a blessed man with many gifts. Above all, he loved God, his family, and his hometown community. His daughters often said, one of the best lessons they learned from their father, was to always love and serve their family and community and use their God-given gifts to glorify God. William not only shared those salient words with his daughters, he led by example, through always lending a helping hand to many people in his community, having a strong work ethic, and faithfully providing and caring for his family. He was known for his kind disposition and warm, loving smile. He smiled and beamed with unspeakable joy, shortly before his transition to Heaven, when his daughters shared with him the ways that they are endeavoring to carry forth his and their mother's legacy in their hometown community.

"Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change— James 1:17 ." On Sunday morning, February 4, 2018, William finished his earthly work! Surrounded by his loving daughters, God called him, and he peacefully went home and entered eternal life with the Lord, his beloved wife, and heavenly family. William's daughters thank the Lord for sharing His good gift on this earth for 82 years.

William was preceded in death by his father, Malachi Willie Tompkins; mother, Jessiena Raiford Tompkins; brother, Harold V. Johnson; and his beloved wife, Marian Evonne Neal Tompkins. The following people are left to mourn his passing, but they are also celebrating his anointed, purpose-filled life. Today, they are rejoicing in God's blessed promise, that the separation is only temporary, and they will be reunited in body and spirit one day to live together in eternity. His much-loved family, which he leaves behind includes, his loving daughters, Linda Darlene Tompkins Reddick and Cynthia Elaine Tompkins; his granddaughter, Lauren Kadi Reddick; sister-in-law, Alice Neal Jones; nephew, Harold V. Holt (Marilyn); niece, Karen Woods (Frank); special cousin, Sondra Hairston (Major), and a host of relatives, former colleagues, and friends.
