Mr. William Henry Bass transitioned from his earthly home on Thursday evening, September 29, 2022 at Pelican Health Care in Reidsville, North Carolina. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2022 at 12 noon at McLaurin Memorial Chapel with family visitation one half hour prior to the service. Public viewing will be held on Friday, October 7, 2022 from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Burial will be conducted at the Greenview Cemetery, Montgomery Street, Reidsville, NC.
William Henry Bass was born on April 12, 1941 in Reidsville, NC and was the firstborn to the late Henry Junius Bass and Annie Hodnett Bass. "H", as he was affectionately called, joined First Baptist Church at an early age and was an active member of the Senior and Men's Choirs until his health declined.
"H" was educated in the public schools of Reidsville, NC and a gradate of Booker T. Washington High School, Class of 1959. Known for his deep bass voice, he was a member of the high school chorus under the direction of Mr. J.A. Major and a three-year letterman in football. He was recently inducted into the Reidsville Football Hall of Fame on September 9, 2022.
After graduation, "H" attended North Carolina A. & T. State University before moving to Syracuse, NY where he attended and graduated from Simmons School of Mortuary Science. After completing his studies in New York, he moved to Asheville, NC where he met his wife, Teresa Sullivan, and was employed by Wilkins Mortuary.
Upon his return to Reidsville from Asheville, "H" held several jobs including GTE Sylvania for 25 years as an Industrial Engineer and Deere Hitachi in Kernersville, NC, where he programmed robots for excavators. After retiring from Deere Hitachi, "H" opened Bass Fish Market which was located on SW Market Street in Reidsville. In addition to his full-time jobs, he worked part-time for many years as an embalmer for McLaurin Funeral Home. "H" was also a member of Masonic Lone Star Lodge #33 and the Reidsville Brothers Club, where he served as secretary for many years. "H" loved fishing, camping, hunting and cooking. His gumbo, walnut and German chocolate cakes were his favorites.
His wife, Teresa Sullivan Bass, sisters, Gloria B. Walker and Mamie Dawkins and brother-in-law, Luther Spence preceded him in death.
Those left to cherish his memory are: daughters, Janette Kearse of High Point, NC, Sharon Cohen of Asheville, NC and Carol Cohen Pickard of Greensboro, NC; four grandchildren, Jerushia Sullivan Bass of High Point, NC, Jaelin Kearse of Oceanside, CA, Gabriele Barton (Walter) of San Diego, CA and Nicholas Pickard of Greensboro, NC; one great granddaughter, Zoelle Barton of San Diego, CA; three sisters, Addie B. Spence of Maywood, IL, Vanessa Dale Wilson (Alvino) of Reidsville, NC and Glenda Kilgore (Richard "Rock") of Charlotte, NC; two brothers, Sterling Bass (Linda) of Pelham, NC and Anthony "Tony" Bass (Karen) of Atlanta, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and a plethora of dear friends.
Ashton and Yolanda McLaurin and the staff of the McLaurin Funeral Home are serving the family. Covid-19 precautions will be followed with social distancing, masks and sanitizing required.
