Mrs. Virginia Dawkins Pickard's Obituary
Reidsville-Virginia Dawkins Pickard was born March 10, 1912 in Red Point (Union County) South Carolina to the late Ethel Jeter and G. Berry Dawkins. On March 10, 2012,she reached her goal and celebrated her 100th birthday at Annie Penn Nursing Home with family and friends. Mrs. Pickard passed on August 19, 2012.
She attended Dawkins Memorial School and Sims High School in Union, SC . Se also attended Barber Scotia College in Concord, N.C. Upon moving to Reidsville, N.C. , Virginia's employment included working at the American Tobacco Co. In Reidsville, she met and married the late Gordon Pickard.
Virginia was a person very generous to those in need, especially the ill. She loved children. She will surely be missed. She has always been a member of Paradise A.M.E., Union, S.C. , however upon moving to Reidsville she joined Jerusalem United Holy Church.
She leaves to cherish her memory, nieces; Jane Lamar Dawkins, Atlanta, GA, Dr. Ethel S. Andrews, Boca Raton, Florida, Markiella Andrews Moore, Chesapeake, VA, Pennye D. (Charles) Hamilton, Columbia, SC, Lisa Dawkins, Orangeburg, SC, Lauren Dawkins, Orangeburg, SC; nephews; Dr. Jesse A. Reed III, Houston, TX , Derryl L. (Rhonda) Reed, West Bloomfield, MI, Peter Dawkins, Decatur, GA, Dr. Lamar W. (Enid) Dawkins Jr., Orangeburg, SC, great grand nieces and nephews , many cousins, including James Adams, Reidsville, N.C., God children Carlise Ronnie Lester and Stephanie Johnson, dear friends including Sedalia Mullins, Pam Beveridge and Camille Gorham and many other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, Virginia has now reunited with all of her siblings - Lorry H."Broad River" Dawkins, Platanova "Sis" Dawkins, Elease D. Reed, Lamar W. Dawkins, Sultana "Sully" D. Andrews, Canaza Brown, Ervin "Red" Dawkins, Perin Dawkins and Brody Dawkins.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Annie Penn Nursing Home for their dedicated service.
Viewing will be 5:30-6:30 Friday August 24, 2012 at McLaurin Funeral Home, Reidsville, NC.
Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Sunday, August 26, 2012 at Paradise AME Church, 115 Paradise Church Rd., Union, SC. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Divine Mortuary, Union, SC. is serving the family.
McLaurin Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
