Susie M. Lane

REIDSVILLE, NC - Mrs. Susan M. Lane, age 85, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 16, 2026 at Annie Penn Hospital.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, September 23, 2026 from 12 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at McLaurin-Harris Funeral Home, 721 East Morehead Street, Reidsville, NC.

Celebration of life services will be held Thursday, September 24, 2026 from the First Baptist Church, 401 Hubbard Street, Reidsville, NC. Visitation with the family will begin at 1:30 p.m., followed by the service at 2:00 p.m. Reverend Dr. Thomas L. Barksdale, II will officiate and Reverend Dr. Joseph A. Bryant will serve as eulogist. 

The interment will follow in the Greenview Cemetery, Reidsville, NC.

All other times, the family will receive friends from 1 until 6 p.m. daily at the residence - 3004 Edwin Place, Reidsville, NC.

Susie Mae Lane was born on May 3, 1941 departed this life on September 16, 2026 in Reidsville, North Carolina.

Susie was born in Chester, South Carolina to Sistly Land Gatheright. At around six months of age, her mother brought her to Reidsville to live. Susie excelled in her studies throughout school was valedictorian of Booker T. Washington High School’s Class of 1959. She went on to obtain a Bachelor of Mathematics Degree from NC Central University and a Master of Science Degree from NC A&T State University.

Susie was a devoted mathematics teacher who was able to share her instructing skills at several different locations. She taught at Booker T. Washington High School, Reidsville Senior High School, Reidsville Alternative School, and Rockingham Community College. She spent the majority of teaching career at Reidsville Senior High School. While there, Susie held a number of different posts. Some of them included: Chairperson of Mathematics Department, Member of the Faculty Advisory Committee, Advisor to the Student Council, Advisor to the Modeling Club& Staff Development Representative. Susie was an outstanding mathematics instructor, always willing to go the extra mile. She willingly gave her students additional help after school hours on a regular basis.

Susie was a devoted member of First Baptist Church for virtually all of her life. Her beloved Aunt Candy first took her to the “old” (original) First Baptist Church when Susie was a preschooler and she was continued to be a devout member for the rest of her life. She served in countless positions with the church throughout her life. Some of them included: President of the Rockingham County Union (a group of Baptist churches associated with the Rowan Baptist Association), church clerk and Sunday School teacher among many other roles. Susie was deeply committed to the Lord and to First Baptist Church. She believed that the people therein made the church what it was and it was to them that she felt a deep sense of loyalty.

Susie is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, John H. Lane, Sr., a daughter, Anita Lane of Reidsville, NC, a son, John H. Lane, Jr. (Maggie) of Charlotte, NC; a grandson, Nicklas Jones of Charlotte, NC; siblings – Ollie Gatheright of Reidsville, NC, Denise Mahdi of Forest Heights, MD, Debbie Young-Box of Lake Mary, FL and David Young (Peggy) of Bel Air, MD; a very special cousin, Canzadie Shaffer of Browns Summit, NC as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and of course, many former students!
