Sharon Denise Settle Richardson was born on August 13, 1963, in Reidsville, N.C., to the late Elizabeth Benton Settle and Jerry Raymond Settle. After courageously enduring several years of illness, she passed away peacefully on Friday, March 6, 2026, at the Annie Penn Hospital with her husband James and her brother Gene at her side.
As a native and lifelong resident of Rockingham, N.C., she attended the local public schools and was a graduate of Rockingham County Senior High School, Class of 1981.
"Hanful," as she was affectionately called by family and close friends, was an inspiration and a true example of the definition of the word, "determination." Determination refers to a firm, unwavering commitment to achieving a goal, characterized by refusal to quit despite challenges or obstacles and that describes her perfectly! In spite of her illness and treatments she was receiving, as long as she was able, she was ALWAYS ready to go! Whether it was just cruising with her husband, spending time with her sisters, having family a get together, or the trip she would schedule her dialysis treatments around, and that was to go to New Jersey to visit her son, Devanté and his family. She knew she could always count on her nephew, Brandon to get her there.
Being nurtured by parents who displayed love in the home, that love for family was also demonstrated by her. She was a loving wife, mother, stepmother, sister, niece, aunt, grandmother and a dear friend to many. Her beautiful spirit and infectious smile was contagious and caused others to be more positive by seeing what she was going through physically, but she refused to let it limit her.
Having been raised in the church from a child, Sharon was a lifelong member of Locust Hill Apostolic Church. She was a member of the adult choir and took pride in being in "her seat" on the Sundays they sang. She was baptized in the name of Jesus at an early age and remained faithful until her health began to decline and even then she would still attend. She loved her church family and her desire was to be in the service where she could praise Jesus with the saints.
Sharon was employed by Food Lion and retired after eighteen years of service. While working in the deli department, she came in contact with and impacted so many lives through her humbleness and kindness. She left a lasting impression wherever she went.
She will be deeply missed by her family and all who knew her. Beautiful memories of her will be forever etched in our hearts. We rejoice in the comfort of knowing she is free from sickness and pain! No more dialysis, chemo or radiation! Thanks be to Jesus for He hath done all things well! Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints!
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by second mom, Eloise R. Settle; paternal grandparents, Alfred H. Settle and Jennie Sue Settle; maternal grandparents, Robert Lewis Hilderbrand, Sr. and Minnie Benton Hilderbrand; aunt, Kerman Settle Lane; uncle, Robert Lewis Hilderbrand, Jr.
Surviving relatives who shall treasure her precious memory include her husband, James F. Richardson; son, Devanté Connally (fiancé, Alaysia); bonus son, John Connally, Jr. (Kendra); grandchildren, Honnor Harris and Kah'J Connally; bonus grandchildren, Tre' and Kendrick Connally; sisters, Jacqueline S. Percell (Greg) and Pamela S. Scales (Timothy); brothers, Jerry J. Settle, John R. Settle (Karen), and Robert "Gene" Settle; nieces, Tameha Settle, Devynn Settle, and Erika Jordan; nephews, Jerome Perkins, Jermaine Perkins, Jeremy Perkins (Vanessa), Brandon Scales, Jerry J. Settle, II, Keynon Settle, and Michael Collins; seven great-nieces, one great- great-niece, and seven great-nephews; aunts, Carrie Courts, Louvenia Stubblefield, Addie Sue Graves, Clara Williams (Alexander), and Phyllis Thomas; great aunt, Lona Mae Williamson; uncles, Lester T. Hilderbrand and Larry A. Settle; along with a host of cousins, her entire Locust Hill Apostolic Church family, and friends.
