REIDSVILLE - Mr. Samuel Allen Gwynn, Jr., age 77, passed away Saturday, April 26, 2025 at Cypress Valley Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation.
Public viewing will begin on Friday, May 2, 2025 from 12 until 7 p.m. at McLaurin-Harris Funeral Home, 721 East Morehead Street, Reidsville, NC.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 3, 2025 at 3 p.m. from the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, 420 Mizpah Church Road, Reidsville, NC. The family visitation will take place at 2:30 p.m. Pastor Gregory H. Lee will preside and Pastor Paul N. Milton, eulogist.
The committal and interment will follow in the Wesley Chapel UMC Cemetery, Reidsville, NC.
All other times, the family will receive friends at the residence, 276 Cotton Road, Reidsville, NC.
Samuel was born in Rockingham County, NC on November 4, 1947 to the late Samuel and Annie Yancey Gwynn.
Sam attended the local public schools and was a 1965 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School.
Spiritually, Sam accepted the love of Jesus Christ at an early age and united in Christian Fellowship at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. He supported the church faithfully by serving on the Usher Board and as a Trustee. He greatly enjoyed the spirituals sung by his uncle and other members during devotional services.
Professionally, Sam was employed as a first pressman for Container Corporation for nearly 29 years. He was the first African American to serve as lead pressman. While in their employ, he participated in various trainings and procurement trips to Chicago, Illinois and to Nice and Paris, France. Sam was also a proud member of the AFL-CIO.
Sam was an avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting and farming but above all he was a prolific fisherman. He referred to himself as the world's greatest fisherman. He enjoyed any opportunity to fish any pond, lake, or stream. His greatest joy was to go deep sea fishing with family and friends.
Sam's most treasured times were those spent with family. He delighted in family gatherings and any opportunity to spend time with his beloved grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased in death by son, Kenneth Gwynn; sister, Carolyn McCain; and niece, Lisa Galloway.
Surviving are his devoted wife of 42 years, Lillian Bell Gwynn; son, Kevin Gwynn (Aisha); daughter, Tonya Bell-Prince (Darryl); beloved grandchildren, Travis Prince, Kevin, Jr., Mariah and Kenneth Gwynn; special nieces, Laurie Slade and Phyllis Scott; sister-in-law, Linda Baker (Jerry); brother-in-laws, Billy Bell (Odelia) and Jack Bell; a host of relatives and friends.
