Ruth Lindsey was born on February 12, 1924 to Vernon and Katherine (Palmer) McConnell. She grew up with her younger brother, E. George, in the South Jamaica section of Queens, New York. Ruth suffered from polio as a child, but was still able to survive and thrive, enjoying school and attending YWCA and church/social activities.
Ruth graduated from Newtown High School, and began working days while attending Hunter College at night. She met James D. Lindsey at one of her jobs, and they courted before marrying in May, 1947. College had to wait, as Ruth and James settled in the Springfield Gardens section of Queens, New York, and raised two children. During this time Ruth also worked for the Girl Scout organization, where she served as a troop leader and district organizer. She also nurtured and raised a number of foster children.
Once her children were grown, Ruth returned to school, and earned both bachelor and master degrees from Queens College in New York. She worked as a guidance counselor and an ESOL/English teacher in the New York City public school system, and retired in 1985. Ruth and James enjoyed going on cruises and traveling the globe, and shared their love of adventure with family and friends.
Ruth and James later retired to North Carolina, where they built a house near James' homestead in Reidsville. They enjoyed hosting whenever family came to visit, and loved visiting Durham to support their first grandchild when she attended college. Ruth also worked briefly as a literacy coach, and also looked forward to spending time with other seniors at the local senior center.
Ruth lived a sweet life of leisure, where she enjoyed gardening and visiting friends and neighbors. However, soon illness took its toll and Ruth passed away peacefully on June 3, 2015. She was preceded in death by her husband, James, and her son, James, Jr. She leaves behind a daughter, Bayyinah (Muhammad), daughter-in-law Ramona, five grandchildren: Rahmah, Raheemah (Talib), Jennifer, Ahmad and Jessica, two great-grandchildren, Jibril and Fatimah, a sister-in-law, Lillian McConnell, and several nieces and nephews. She will be missed.
