Reidsville – Mrs. Ruth Novella Hamlet of 310 North Washington Avenue, passed away Friday, September 18, 2015.
As a native and lifelong resident of Rockingham County, daughter of John and Lillie Conwell, attended Reidsville public schools and was a 1938 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. Novella married Willie Perry Hamlet on November 9, 1940 and they celebrated seventy- two years of marriage before his transition in 2012. Novella worked for several years at American Tobacco Company, Ideal Cleaners and later worked over 25 years at Burlington Industries before her retirement in 1983. Spiritually, Novella was a lifelong and devoted member of Jerusalem Holy Church where she served in various capacities including secretary/treasurer for her Sunday school class for several years, starting and maintaining with dear friend Mary Davis the church's food pantry, and a member of the A.W. Lawson Chancel Choir, and the Wednesday morning Bible study and prayer group. Novella was also a church mother, member of the deaconess board, and mentor to numerous younger people in the church.
In addition to her mother, father, and husband, Novella was preceded in death by brothers, Zelman and John Conwell. She leaves to cherish her memory and legacy five children: Williette Durant (Sam), Philadelphia, PA; Jacquelyn Dorsey (Nathaniel), Capitol Heights, MD; Larry E. Hamlet, Sr. (Elizabeth), Mitchellsville, MD; Danny E. Hamlet, Sr., Upper Marlboro, MD; Janice D. Hamlet, Sycamore, IL; and honorary daughter, Sandra Slade, Reidsville, N.C.; sister-in-law, Margaret Hamlet, Reidsville, N.C.; eight grandchildren: Novella R. Dorsey; Nathaniel Dorsey, Jr. Nicole A. McLaurin (Kevin); Larry Hamlet, Jr.; Shawnte' Hamlet; Krystal Hamlet; Danny Hamlet, Jr.; Michael Hamlet; six great grandchildren: Luther Perkins, Zian Perkins, Gelisa McLaurin; Nathaniel Dorsey, III; Makel Rollins and Danny Hamlet, III; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, September 26 at Jerusalem United Holy Church at one o'clock p.m. with a visitation beginning at 12:30. Burial will follow in the Roselawn Cemetery, Reidsville, N.C.
