Robert L. Bigelow passed away Friday, November 15 at Golden Living Center, Greensboro, NC.
Funeral Services will be 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at McLaurin Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with a visitation 12:30-1:00 P.M. prior to the service.
Robert Lemuel Bigelow (Jake) was born to the late Ernest and Ollie Bigelow on March 2, 1927. He graduated high school and later on joined the Army. After his honorable discharge, Jake moved to Washington, DC where he worked for the Railroad. After living in the Capitol for a while, Jake returned to NC. Upon moving back, he met and married Selma Graves. Together they had 4 children, 7 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild.
Jake was a man of few words but he showed his love in other ways. He was always willing to help anyone in need. He was a strong family man and worked hard to support his family. He held various jobs and eventually retired from Cone Mills. Due to his declining health, he spent the last few years of his life in Golden Nursing Home where he departed this world on November 15, 2013.
He was preceded in death by his parents, several sisters and brothers including his dear twin brother Rueben Bigelow (Esau).
He is survived by two daughters Laura Graves (Larry) of Greensboro, NC and Lisa Barnes (John) of Brown Summit, NC; two sons Joseph Bigelow (Migdali) and Robert A. Bigelow, both of Greensboro, NC. He is also survived by two sisters Jennie Holloway of Durham, NC and Theola Thompson of Philadelphia, PA; and one brother Ernest Bigelow of Winston-Salem, NC. Left behind as well are grandchildren, Shaniqua, Louis, Robert (Man), Tameka, Megan, Ian, and Donovan, great-granddaughter, Aaliyah, and a host of nieces and nephews. Jake will be truly missed by his family and friends and forever loved.
