Mother Elsie Lee Powell Cobb was born the seventh daughter in her family of eleven siblings, on March 5, 1932, in Reidsville, Rockingham County, North Carolina to the late Cajor Powell, Sr. and Lillie Scales Powell.

At an early age, "Mother Elsie" became a member of Elm Grove Missionary Baptist Church.  Upon her profession of faith and realizing there was work to be done in God's Kingdom, she began her journey of Servitude.  She served the Gospel Choir for over sixty years as the President.  She poured out her heart through songs, encouraging everyone with her favorites, "Holding On To My Faith," "Don't Wait 'til the Battle is Over," "I Go To The Rock," and "I Made It Over."  We cannot forget how she taught us about the power of prayer in that "Prayer is the Key and Faith Unlocks the Door."  Everyone she met, she always had a kind word of encouragement, and she definitely let everyone know "It's Time To Clean Up and Set Your House in Order".  She also served faithfully with other auxiliaries including the Willing Workers, Beautification Committee, and the Culinary Staff.

The special occasions are memorable, especially the Gospel Choir Anniversary.  Family and friends would gather at her home where the bounty was plentiful.  And many will never forget those delicious "sweet potato and pineapple-coconut pies."   She enjoyed seeing others eating the many dishes she had prepared.  One of her hobbies included fishing with friends, Sarah Galloway and Larry Fuller.  In earlier years, they would head for the creek for fishing whenever they had the opportunity and laugh for hours upon hours while waiting to catch a fish.  Her most favorite pastime was gardening.   She loved her flowers, working the soil, planting, watering, and watching them grow while sitting on her porch.  She was a avid member of the Amos Street Flower Club and loved winning "The Yard of the Month."  She retired from Creighton Inc./Brookside as an Inspector.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in her death by husband of sixty-seven years, Freeman Cobb, Sr.; daughter, Abigail Cobb; son, Rev. Freeman Cobb, Jr.; five brothers, Fred Douglas Powell (Lucy), William Powell, Cajor Powell, Jr., Lorenzo Powell, and Joe Frank Powell; six sisters, Eva Marie Neal (James), Rosa Bell Thomas (Willie), Frances Irene Blackwell (Deacon Junious), Edna Earl Withers (William), Addie Mae Lee (Freddie), and Susan Ann Williamson (Walter); and grandchildren, Desiree Millner and Sam Cave.

She leaves to cherish her memories: two daughters, Mrs. Denise Gail Kimber (Kenneth) of Reidsville, NC and Lady Angela (Ann) Moore (Pastor Kenneth) of Browns Summit, NC; daughter-in-Law, Mrs. Gwendolyn Cobb of Greensboro, NC; special niece-daughter, Delores (Lois) B. Jones of Reidsville, NC; six  grandchildren, Colby, Harlan (Janelle), Tiffany (Eric), Shannon (Joey), Sonja and Tecumah; twelve great grandchildren,  Milik, Lamar, Byanca, Alona, Talan, Takari, Chelsea, Chayia, Chalia, CJ, Justis, and Shamar; one great-great grandchild, CJ Jr.; special nieces, Lorraine (Poochie) Cobb and Velma Davis; nieces, nephews, cousins, and a plethora of "adopted children" and dear friends.

Ashton and Yolanda McLaurin and the staff of the McLaurin Funeral Home are serving the family.  Covid-19 precautions will be followed with social distancing, masks and sanitizing required.
