"James" as he was affectionately called, was educated in the public schools of Columbus County, North Carolina and graduated from Acme Delco Senior High School in 1985 where he starred on the varsity football team as a defensive lineman. Soon after graduation, he moved to Greensboro, North Carolina where he met the love of his life, Sharon Blackwell. They were united in Holy Matrimony on March 2, 1998.

He was called into the ministry in 2005 and did his initial sermon at First Love Christian Center under Pastor John C. Lemon. Later, he joined High Rock Church where he taught Bible Study and Sunday School and preached on Sundays as needed. He later united with Life Lifters Church under Bishop Manwell Grady. He was a faithful member and served wherever needed in many ministries, including Usher Board and the Security Team. He did further study at Greensboro Bible Institute, earning a diploma in Bible in 2015, a diploma in Theology in 2016, as well as certificates in Standard Church Ministry, Advanced Church Ministry and Foundational Church Ministry.
A devoted husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend, James was also an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys. He was employed at Rockingham County School System since 2010, as well as O'Reilly Auto Parts. In his spare time, he loved painting, fishing, cooking out, mowing the lawn and just "hanging out" with his family.
