Our beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend was born in Rockingham County to the late Hosea and Mary B. Neal. Attending the local public schools, Mattie studied and matured in the contour of her community learning the lesson of home and society. She was known for her good cooking and especially her delicious cakes. Many people often asked her to bake cakes for various occasions just because they knew it would be good every time.
The essence of her Christian faith was declared by the union she established at an early age with Wesley Chapel Methodist Church where she served on the Usher Board. Mattie later joined her husband "G.W.", becoming a member of Elm Grove Missionary Baptist Church where she was a member of the Pastor's Aide and had the honor of being named Mother of the Year.
Mattie's life was truly centered around her family. She was a homemaker, devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother. She worked alongside her husband on the farm, whether it was working in tobacco or the garden, she did what was needed until it was done. She leaves a legacy of love, beautiful memories and kind deeds for all of us to emulate.
Preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, George W. Harrison Jr.; surviving relatives to cherish her memory include four children; Bishop Allen C. Harrison (Shenna), Shirley H. Watkins (Larry), Maurice D. Harrison (Jacqueline) and Elder Ardell D. Harrison all of Gibsonville, NC, seven grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, and a dear devoted caregiver, Margaret Watkins (Kenneth) of Reidsville, NC.
