GREENSBORO - Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Thornton Stokes, age 74, departed this life on Monday, January 6, 2025 at Gibson House at Ancora Compassionate Care in Reidsville, NC.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her father, Mr. Walter Whitt, 8530 Friendship Church Road, Reidsville, NC.

Public viewing will begin on Friday, January 10, 2024 from 12 until 6 p.m. at McLaurin-Harris Funeral Home, 721 East Morehead Street, Reidsville, NC. (No viewing will be held on Saturday, due to expected inclement weather).

Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 12, 2024 at 2 p.m. from the McLaurin-Harris Memorial Chapel, 721 East Morehead Street, Reidsville, NC. The family visitation will take place at 1:30 p.m. Reverend Chris Cox, eulogist.

The committal and interment will follow in Greenview Cemetery, Reidsville, NC.

Mary was a native of Rockingham County and later made her home in Greensboro, NC.

She was a career textile worker at Cone Mills for over 35 years. Her leisure time was spent reading and playing bingo.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Margaret Thornton Whitt; sister, Sandra Aiken; brother, David Lamont Whitt; uncle, Melvin Whitt; aunt, Mae Williamson; sisters-in-law, Patricia Hilderbrand and Mary Stokes James.

Survivors include children, Elizabeth "Ann" Stinson, Janet Nichols (Stacy), Anthony Stokes (Angie) and Emmanuel Garner; grandchildren, Mariah Stinson, Tamisha Dalton, Tempestt Roberts and DaShawn Chapman; father, Walter Whitt; siblings, Gary Whitt, Keith Whitt, Sharon Rucker, Toni Thomas (Barry) and Sylvia Whitt (Maurice); 8 great-grandchildren; a host of relatives and friends.
