Mary D.
Alexander
Mar 22, 1930 — Aug 26, 2017
Mrs. Mary Douglas Alexander, 87, of Reidsville, NC passed away at Annie Penn Hospital on August 26, 2017. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School with the Class of 1947. She attended Morgan State College (University), where she majored in Music. She met and married her now deceased husband, Charles Alexander, in Baltimore, Md.
From a very early age she was a devoted and very active member of the Zion Baptist Church in Reidsville, NC. She became the Church Choir Director, where she started the Male Chorus. She was a Sunday School Teacher, and a Deacon Emeritus of the Church. She coordinated a fundraiser to purchase new large print Bibles for the Church. In her later years, she volunteered to answer the Church telephone during the week until her health began to decline at the age of 80 and she could no longer continue.
She retired from GTE/Sylvania and became the travel coordinator at the Senior Citizens Club in Reidsville for many years. She was employed under The National Caucus and Center on Black Aged, a government program for Senior Citizens. Also, under that program, she worked at the Social Security Administration; City of Reidsville Recreation Department; Caregivers of Reidsville; and was an enthusiastic literary tutor. She truly enjoyed working and was proud of her ability to do so for those years.
In her more recent years, she resided with her daughter and son-in-law, Cassandra and Leotis Bumpas, until February of this year, where Penn Nursing Center was her place of residence.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Nancy D. France, her son Rufus Alexander, her step-father Ralph France, her "special sister" Jean Doris Collins, and her many cherished aunts, uncles, and close relatives.
She is survived by her children Cassandra Bumpas (Leotis), Annette Bolden (Vincent), Joseph Alexander, and Linda Alexander; five grandchildren, Felicia Bolden, Vincent Bolden II (Kristie), Charles Bumpas (Pattie), Eddie Byrd (Lillian), and Jessica Alexander; nine great-grandchildren, and other cousins; her special cousin, Gerdia Keesee; and special friend, Mrs. Margaret Wells.
The family would like to thank the staff at Penn Nursing Center and the Annie Penn Hospital Intensive Care Unit for their care and concern during her time there. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Zion Baptist Church, or the Leaf Center in Reidsville.
Funeral services will be held at Zion Baptist Church on Thursday, August 31, at 12:00 noon, with family visitation from 11:30am-12noon.
Public viewing will be Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at 12:00 noon until 7:00 P.M.
Burial will take place at Greenview Cemetery, Reidsville, NC
