Mack was born in Rockingham County to the late Alfred Settle and Minnie Williams Settle. He was pre-deceased by his wife Elizabeth Settle, son Mack Settle Jr., brothers: Jessie Settle, Elisha Settle, Elijah (Pearl) Settle, William Settle, Jake (Delores) Settle, Herman (Sue) Settle, Sister: Annie Settle, brother-in-law Joseph Williamson Sr. and two stepsons Alphony and Anthony Settle.
Mack was educated in the Rockingham County School System. Mack was no stranger to hard work and had a strong work ethic. He worked at The American Tobacco Company for some years. He later worked at Macfield for many years until it closed. He continued to work in textiles and then worked for Unifi, Inc. where he finished out his working career until retirement.
Mack loved his church. He looked forward to dressing up on Sunday mornings, as he was a sharp dresser. When he was able, he attended church every Sunday. He could always be found in the parking lot parking cars. Other times, his seat was usually to the back so he could easily slide out when assistance in the parking lot was needed.
Mack always took pride in things looking good around his home, He loved riding his lawnmower and keeping his yard cut and neat. He loved sitting on the porch and talking with his neighbors and friends who would stop by and chat with him. There was always a good conversation to be had when he was sitting on the car porch or at the kitchen table. His conversations were intentional and meaningful. Never much small talk. He especially loved it when Herman would drop by with a box of chicken from Bojangles. That always made his day. When he could drive, he always kept his car sparkling clean, rain or shine, especially for Sunday to go to church. Later as his health declined, he moved to Cypress Valley Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. There he made new friends, sitting in the doorway of his room. He continued to share his stories and quiet wit and demeanor with those he met. He knew how to make everyone laugh. Ha-Ha!
Mack loved his family. His daughter Darlene was the apple of his eye. His grandchildren truly meant the world to him, and a time did not go by that he would not ask about them. He would ask about his various nieces and nephews in the same way. He truly loved his sister. He would always ask "how granny doing"? Mack had a love of eating good food—like fried chicken, pinto beans, and corn bread. He had a bad sweet tooth and was really a junk food junkie. One of his favorite sayings was "bring me something good". One of his favorite cakes was a honey bun cake. He loved to eat oatmeal cakes, cookies, chips and drink a Mountain Dew. He was a soft spoken, compassionate man with a gentle spirit that will be sorely missed.
Mack is survived by his loving daughter R. Darlene (Bennie) Perkins, Blue Springs, MO; a sister: Lona Mae Williamson, Reidsville, NC; daughter-in-law JoAnn Settle, Reidsville, NC; grandchildren, Nikki Settle, Norfolk, VA; Dezmon (Janay) Settle, Reidsville, NC, Jewel Perkins, Atlanta, GA; Tristan Perkins, Charlotte, NC, 10 great- grandchildren; step-grandchildren: Bryant Settle, Reidsville, NC, Gerard (Candida) Settle Gibsonville, NC, and Quinton Settle; five step and great-grandchildren: special and dear friends Herman Farrish and Rev. Tommy Williamson, a host of other nieces, nephews and other family members and friends.
