Mother Garrett became a member of Smyrna Church at an early age under the leadership of her brother the Late Apostle Preston Graves Sr. where she served faithfully until her illness.

Mother Garrett was a praiser and loved the Lord. She didn't mind helping anyone tarry for the Holy Ghost and had no problem saying "You ain't got it, come back tomorrow night". Mother Garrett would testify how she was baptized the first time "I went down a dry devil and came up a wet devil, but when she went down in the Name of Jesus there was change instantly". She was known as "Aunt Lus" and "Mother Garrett" to many. Mother Garrett was a foster mother to many children whom she raised in her home.
