Mr. Lawrence Price Jr., age 88, longtime resident of 1209 Patterson Avenue, Reidsville, N.C. passed away peacefully on Friday, July 17, 2015 at Hospice of Rockingham County, with his wife Mrs. Gladys Cummings Price at his side.
Funeral service will be Friday, July 24, 2015 at 1:00 P.M. at First Baptist Church, Hubbard St., Reidsville, NC. Visitation will be 12:30 P.M. - 1:00 P.M. prior to the service. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Reidsville, N.C.
Mr. Price was born on January 11, 1927 in Lynn, West Virginia, a coal mining town, to the late Nettie Johnson Price and Lawrence Price, Sr. He was the older of four children. His family moved to Red Jacket, W. Va, a nearby coal mining town, where he attended Red Jacket School until he moved to Reidsville at age 13 to attend school and live with his grandparents, the late William and Lizzie Johnson of Vance Street. He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1945, afterwards working for American Tobacco Company making cigarettes.
Mr. Price was also a business entrepreneur and owner of Price's Danceland during the 50's to 90's while Black businesses thrived in Reidsville. He was one of the plaintiffs in a landmark class action lawsuit against American Tobacco Company that led to African Americans moving into managerial positions.
He was a member of Lone Star Lodge #33 Prince Hall, having been a member since 1960. He also was a member of the Fellows Club where he served in a variety of leadership positions from President to Ways & Means Chairman for over 30 years.
Mr. Price is survived by his wife, Gladys Price; daughter Gina Price Mills (Vernon) and son Jeffrey Price of Reidsville; son Lawrence "Eddie" Price III (Dr. Marva Laverne) of Pittsboro; son Ernest Price of East Providence, RI; son Michael "Terry" Price (Isa) of Warrick, RI; a sister Mary Brown of Reidsville; and brother Charles Price (Pat) of Alpharetta, Ga. He leaves to mourn 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; and many wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Sibling preceding him in death was William "York" Price.
