ZaRuth or "La" as she was affectionately known; grew up in a blended family of 16 siblings in Alamance County, later moving to Reidsville. All have preceded her in death.
Her parents, share croppers and musically inclined family, encouraged her in the Lord. They taught her how to live off the land cooking, farming, and gardening, along with providing a piano for her to use he God given gifts of singing and playing "by ear."
LaRuth joined First Christian Church after marrying the love of her life Joe M. Walker, Sr. in 1943. She joyfully labored with her husband decorating the church and parsonage with her beautiful flower arrangements, and offered her gifts of sing and playing. She served on the Beautification Ministry along with caring for the Pastor, sick and shut in and bereaved families, often blessing them with her culinary delicacies such as her famous pound cake and her sweet potato pies.
LaRuth worked alongside her husband keeping the books and managing the clerical side of the family business, Walker Construction, later renamed Joe M. Walker and Sons. During a long successful career assisting her husband, LaRuth took pleasure in fishing, gardening, sewing and decorating, sharing the fish and home grown vegetables with friends and family or those in need.
