Jonita T.
Lathan
Mar 6, 1968 — May 4, 2020
Mrs. Jonita Tyrena Lathan arrived on March 6, 1968 in Washington, DC to Tyrone and Juanita Hunter. Jonita was called home the morning of May 4, 2020 unexpectantly.
Private Graveside services will be 1:00 P.M. Saturday, May 9, 2020 at Saint Thomas Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery. Public viewing will be held Friday, May 8, 2020 from 1 - 4:00 P.M. at McLaurin Funeral Home.
She was the widow of Mr. Johnny Lathan, with whom she shared eight years of love and marriage.
After attending and graduating from Laurel Park High School, she earned her Associates' Degree in her field of passion – Early Childhood Education, from Guilford Technical Community College. Her love for children led her to operate and serve in several daycare and childcare establishments where she would become known as an advocate for child welfare and her love for youth. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and while being a mother figure to friends of her children alike, she was often referred to as "Ma".
Jonita enjoyed being amongst the young and writing poetry to soothe the soul. She often inspired others by way of reciting her works and sharing with crowds. To know Mrs. Lathan is to know that she enjoyed her spontaneous trips to 'Starbucks' and being in the comfort of her grandchildren.
She was a member of St. Thomas Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church and will be remembered for her unwavering faith and warm smile, which she passed on to her offspring.
She is survived by two daughters, Natasha Jones, of Greensboro, NC and Keyona Manns, of High Point, NC; three grandchildren, Terez Smarr, Makayla Staley, and McKenzie Walker ;Parents, Bishop Dr. Tyrone D. Hunter and Elect Lady Juanita W. Hunter of Greensboro, NC, four siblings, Darryl (Diane) Hunter, Teresa (Terry) Neal, Rita Hunter, and Tonya (Darryl) Hurst, all of Greensboro, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
McLaurin Funeral Home is serving the family.
