Dec 26, 1923 — Sep 13, 2017
Joe Roach was born on December 26, 1923 in Reidsville, North Carolina to the late Annie Pearl Roach Garland, daughter of Lucy Roach, who lovingly raised him.
He joined in the United States Army in 1943 and served in the 2 nd Calvary Division in Ft. Clark, TX, during World War II. He went on to Winston-Salem Teacher's College, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1949. Subsequently, he earned his Master of Science in Education from Penn State University.
Joe began his teaching career in Caswell County, NC, in the small town of Yanceyville, NC. As a teacher with Jefferson County Public Schools in Louisville, KY, he taught at Perry Elementary, Brandeis Elementary and Knight Middle School and received numerous awards and honors. He proudly celebrated his retirement in 1991.
Having fallen in love, Joe married the former Mildred Andrews and to this union Joe K. and Joan were born. Later in life, being lucky enough to find love once again, he married the former Mabel Littlejohn and adopted her daughter Carolyn into their loving and blended family.
Joe was an avid golfer who also enjoyed horse racing, music and dancing. He was also a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Lucy Roach, mother Annie Pearl Roach Garland, brother Leon Garland and sister, Inez Roach. To cherish his memory, he leaves his daughters, Joan Floyd and Carolyn Bibbie; son, Joe K. Roach; sisters Bernice Calloway, and Annie P. Stockton; six grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, one great great-grandchild and a host of family and friends.
