Obituary

Mr. Jim Henry Smith passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at Peak Resources Treyburn Nursing Center, Durham, NC.


Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Sunday at Bluestone Baptist Church, Pelham, NC with a visitation 1:30-2:00P.M. prior to the service and burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Jim was born May 13, 1921 in Pelham, NC to the late Robert Smith and Texanna Williams Smith. In 1942, He enlisted into the United States Army, where he served as a Buffalo Soldier in World War II. He was honored for his service in the 92nd Infantry Division with the Bronze Star. After the war, he returned to Pelham to work as a mechanic in Dan River Mill for 50 years. He also worked hard as farmer, raising cattle and tobacco amongst other things. He remained active in his work and church throughout his life.

Jim was baptized at Bluestone Baptist Church when Rev. Warren was pastor. He was also very active in prison ministries and was a deacon of Bluestone Baptist Church.

In 1949, Jim married Nellie Hogue Smith and helped to raise 2 children: Sandra Hairston and William Smith. He is also survived by 3 siblings: Dorothy Morrison, Pagie Lipscomb, and Rev. Aldolphus Smith, 3 grandchildren: Lateefah Smith, Tiffany Hairston, and Alicia Hairston, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Jim Smith was an outgoing and generous man of God who was rich in spirit and in wisdom. His love and kindness will truly be missed by all.
