Jennie matriculated through Caswell County public schools. She retired from Chase Bag Company after 21 years of service in 1985.

As a long time member of Mt. Herman Baptist Church, she utilized her affinity for hospitality towards others via service on the Usher board where she served as secretary for many years.

Early in life, Jennie was known for her gregarious nature and her ability to engage diverse types of people. Jennie was a talented seamstress and enjoyed making clothes and completing alterations for a plethora of family, church, and community members. She was known to be generous with her time, talents, and ability to cheer others. Much of her time was spent checking up on and talking with her friends, family, and neighbors.

Jennie is preceded in death by one son, Frederick B. Benbow.

Left to cherish her memory are three children, Vera B. Ross of Orlando, FL, Amanda Gilreath Mickens of Beaverdam, VA, and Joseph T. Gilreath (Tami) of Richmond, VA; five grandchildren, Angelo Ross of Decatur, GA, Tamika D. Gilreath of Los Angeles, CA, April Mickens Jolly (Andy) of Atlanta, GA, Alexander Mickens of Beaverdam, VA, and Maliik Reid Gilreath of Richmond, VA; and three great grandchildren, Vance Ross, Jr., Dominique Ross, and Xavier Ross. Boyd of Hartford, CT and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was blessed to have several adopted daughters who assisted her family with caretaking and we are especially grateful to Turnette Chestnut, Johnnie Mae German, Bessie Jordan, and Gail Wilson.
