Mr. James "Jim" William Herbin was born on September 8, 1935 in Guilford County, North Carolina to the late Ira and Hattie Jane Milton Herbin.
Jim joined Jackson United Methodist Church at an early age and was active in the United Methodist Men. In 1972, along with the leadership of Pastor R. W. Johnson, the members decided it was time to move forward in fulfilling the dreams of current and those deceased members who had worked hard to someday see a new brick structure replace their old plank church. A new sanctuary, which presently stands, was erected. Under the leadership of James Herbin, in order to pay off the mortgage early, members leased land from Herbert Hopkins and raised tobacco.
Jim attended the public schools of Guilford County and later became employed at North Carolina A & T State University retiring after 30+ years of service. Always an entrepreneurial spirit, Jim farmed the land every year, in every season, and also owned a community pool room. He enjoyed all sports activities, especially bowling, and loved to make people laugh. An inside joke with the youngsters, whom he adored, was he always made them say the alphabet backwards and rewarded them accordingly.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Emma Ann Mitchell Herbin.
Those left to cherish fond memories include: son, James Kenneth Herbin, of the home; five daughters, Gloria Herbin Vinson (Lysander), Darlene Herbin, Debra Herbin, all of Greensboro, NC, Shelia Herbin-Jones (William), of Redondo Beach, CA, and Valeria "Shae" H. Crosby (Willie), of McLeansville, NC; three grandchildren, Kenny Robinson (Le'Teya), Ashley Johnson and Jana Jones; one great-grandson, Casey Thomas Robinson; five sisters, Mamie Watlington, Betty McCain, Geraldine Wilson, Liddie Slade (Thomas), and Doris Anderson, all of Greensboro, NC; one brother, Ira Herbin, Jr., of Greensboro, NC; one sister-in-law, Frances Mitchell; and a host of relatives and dear friends.
