He was born in March 19, 1953 in Axton, VA to Booker Thomas and Elizabeth (Conrad) Giles; a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Gertrude Giles; brothers, Lee Andrew Giles, Booker Sylvester Giles, James Stanford Giles, Charles Ambus Giles, Lewis Randolph Giles, Kenneth Lee Meadows and Floyd William Giles.
Harold, also known as Sherman was educated in the Henry County, VA pinko schools system and earned his high school diploma. He was employed by Karastan/Mohawk Industries for over 40 years as a Threading Operator. Throughout his career, he was known for his hard work, dedication and passion in mentoring colleagues.
Brother Sherman professed repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and was a lifelong, faithful member of The Only Way Church of Christ, Eden, NC under the leadership of Bishop William H. Giles. It was Bishop Giles who not only introduced him to the Lord, but also cultivated his passion for playing the guitar. He taught him how to play the lead guitar as a teen, with the emphasis of playing "skillfully" unto the Lord. Harold stood out as a gifted musician who played a right-handed guitar, upside-down, left-handed due to a missing left index finger. It was because of him that his family blossomed musically. Harold was committed to his church and served in many roles to ensure the upkeep and operation of the church. The impact of his labor and contributions are still being experienced today.
Harold was a loving husband, devoted father and cherished grandfather. He prioritized spending quality time with his family, particularly his grandchildren whenever possible, sharing laughs, playing games, grilling out, supporting their endeavors and watching favorite TV shows. He was a die-hard Lakers fan and enjoyed watching MMA, professional wrestling and professional boxing. He loved nature, fishing and traveling, especially cruising with his family. He was an adventurer, especially when it came to sampling all types of exotic foods. His "mystery meats" were quite surprising and even enjoyable at times. He was an unwavering provider and protector for his family, as well as a Jack of all trades for his home. He loved family reunions and church gatherings, and ensured they were full of music.
He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Mary (Hardin) Giles of the home; his children, Shanna Broadnax of Eden, NC, Shermale Hardin Motley (Carl) of Ridgeway, VA, Angela Giles Venable (Nicholas) of Raleigh, NC and Harold Sherman Giles, Jr. (Tiphanie) of Burlington, NC; a brother, Alonzo Giles of Axton, VA; a sister, Dorethia Giles of Axton, VA; seven grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
