Gordon Douglas Broadnax was born March 29, 1953, in Reidsville, North Carolina. Gordie, as he was affectionately known, was the second of four children born into the union of Frederick Douglas and Charlie Mae Jones Broadnax. He was a lifelong resident of Reidsville, and he was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Reginald Vandor Broadnax, and Phillipe DeLawrence Broadnax.

He was a product of the Reidsville School System receiving his early education from Branch Street Elementary School. Gordie attended Reidsville High School, and he graduated with the class of 1971. After graduation, he enrolled in Winston-Salem State University for a period of two years.

Gordie gave his life to Christ at an early age joining the First Christian Church under the leadership of Reverend Moses L. Lambert. He was a member of this church until he made the decision to join True Vine Tabernacle Baptist Church. Gordie was a faithful member of True Vine, and he attended church regularly until his health issues prevented him from doing so. While at True Vine, Gordie participated in various church groups and organizations. He was a member of both the Male and Gospel Choirs, as well as the Kitchen Committee. He was willing to perform any tasks that he was asked to do.

Gordie was born with an industrious spirit, and he began working at Lane's Shoe Store at the age of 14. He continued working there on the weekends while attending Winston-Salem State University. He worked there until this store closed. This gives him the recognition of being one of the first blacks to work in a retail position in Reidsville. After Lane's closed, Gordie worked at various jobs such as: Equity Meats, Burger King and Branch Wood Care Center.

For all of those who truly knew Gordie, they knew he was a lover of old school R&B music. He specifically loved the music which was released in the late seventies and the early eighties. Gordie was a die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan, and he also loved his Los Angeles Lakers. He was truly very passionate about the players and the teams he loved. Gordie was also a member of the Black Explosion Softball team. He played outfield on a team which dominated Reidsville's Park and Recreation league in the late 1970's.

On February 25, 2025, God in his infinite wisdom dispatched his Angel of mercy delivering him from pain to peace. Gordie truly loved his large extended family which includes a devoted sister, Frederica Broadnax Townes (Granville Houston Townes III); nephews, Granville Houston Townes IV (Jessica), and Reginald V. Broadnax Jr.; nieces, Arlisa Broadnax Dail (Bobby), Crystal Townes Hill (Roderick); sister-in-law, Shelton Edwards Broadnax, along with his great nephews, Roderick D. Hill Jr., Micha Wills and Roman H. Hill; great nieces, Madyson Wills, Nollie Townes, Hadley Townes and Mia Dail; his extended family also included Mrs. Odella Covington, Rhonda and John E. Covington and Odessa Bullitt, along with a host of cousins and his True Vine family.
