Mrs. Gladys Motley Crawford was born on April 5, 1925 in Reidsville, North Carolina to the late Juanita Neal Motley and Alvis Motley. She departed her earthly home on Saturday, October 13, 2012.
Funeral will be 12 noon on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at Zion Baptist Church with Rev. Michael A. Long officiating. The family visitation will be prior to the service in the Multipurpose Center of the Church from 11 to 11:45 a.m. Burial will follow at Greenview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Zion Baptist Church and mailed to PO Box 2448, Reidsville, NC 27323. Please note scholarship fund in the subject line.
Gladys graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1945 where she played on the Girls' Basketball Team. She married Calvin C. Crawford on December 21, 1947. Later she attended Clark College, now Clark –Atlanta University, in Atlanta, Georgia.
Early in life she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and joined Zion Baptist Church where she was a lifelong member. She worked tirelessly in her church in the Youth Choir and later as an adult, an Usher, Junior Usher Advisor, and member of Missionary Group Dorcas. She worked with the Girl Scout troops of her church for many years and was the Sunday School teacher for the Cradle Roll Department for more than fifty years.
Gladys retired from Chase Bag Company after many years of service. She volunteered at Reidsville Senior Center Nutrition Site and was a member of the West End Community Club, and the Beauty of Reidsville Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 477. .
She loved working with young children and became a "second mother" to many of them. She constantly encouraged them to always do their best and to strive to reach their highest potential.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Pauline M. Forrest and Betty M. Woods; beloved brother Alvis Motley, Jr., half-brothers Albert, Earlington, and Leon Motley.
She leaves to cherish her memories: loving husband of sixty-four years, Calvin C. Crawford of the home; daughters, Portia C. Burston (James) and Faye Crawford, both of Reidsville, NC and Tonya C. Smith (Darryl) of Sterling Heights, MI; grandchildren, Andrea Burston, Jennifer B. Sheffield, Bryson Smith and Brandon Smith; one great grandchild, Lauren Sheffield; brother, James Edward Motley (Rose) of Tularosa, NM; sisters-in-law, Marie Motley of Reidsville, NC, Annie C. Tate of Fort Washington, MD, and Mary Jane Crawford of Greensboro, NC., special nieces, Lula C. Bass (Harold) and Thelma C. Bell (Samuel); special nephews, Vernon Motley (Diane) and Baxter Motley; longtime neighbors and friends, Ernestine and John Henderson, Freedia Jones and Margaret Wells, "special son" Gregory Cobb (Tynesha); step-sister Dorothy Durham of Dover, DE; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
