Deacon Moses Staton, Jr., the beloved son of the late Moses Staton Sr. and Bertha Brayboy Staton, was born on January 18, 1940, in Danville, Virginia. He entered eternal rest on Friday, January 10, 2025, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, North Carolina.
As a native of Danville, Virginia, "June", as he was affectionately called by family and friends, attended the local public schools. He later pursued a career as a long-distance truck driver, a profession he excelled in until his well-deserved retirement. Deacon Staton met the love of his life, Ethel Adele Totten, and they were united in holy matrimony on September 1, 1979. Their loving partnership lasted 45 beautiful years.
Together, they built a life centered on faith, family, and service. A dedicated member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Deacon Staton was deeply involved in the church's ministries. He faithfully served on the Deacon Board, Male Chorus, Ushers Board, and Transportation Committee. He also chaired the Friends and Family Day Committee and was an active member of the Men of Faith ministry.
During his youth, he spent significant time in South Carolina, where he shared a close bond with his cousins Walter "WJ" and Marie "Arthur Mae," whom he cherished as siblings.
Deacon Staton was a pillar of his community. He served with distinction as a member of Lone Star Lodge #33 and on the board of The New Reidsville Housing Authority. He volunteered tirelessly, including supporting the Reidsville High School Chorus and providing transportation for medical staff during inclement weather. Known as a "Grill Master", he took pride in his culinary skills and often brought people together over his delicious cooking.
In addition to his parents, Deacon Staton was preceded in death by his brother, Andrew Leon Powers.
Left to cherish his legacy of love, faith, and service are: his devoted wife: Ethel Adele Totten Staton; his loving children: Tony Ray Staton Sr. (Tanja) and Cicely Staton-Holt (Demetrous) his grandchildren: Tony Staton Jr., Dimitri Holt, Courtney Holt, Cedric Staton,
Londyn Holt, Mariah Holt, and Uriah Holt; his great-grandchild: Elsie Lynne Porter Staton; a host of nieces and nephews, including one special niece, Rev. Dr. Vertie Powers, and special nephews, Darien McGriff and Christopher Totten; his godchildren: Wilford McLeod, Kathy Bright, NaKecia Broadnax, Lisa Bolden, and Victor Slade; many other relatives, friends, and community members who will dearly miss him.
Deacon Moses Staton, Jr. will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend whose life was a testament to faith, kindness, and unwavering service. His legacy lives on through the lives he touched and the love he gave so freely.
