REIDSVILLE, NC - Deacon Walter Johnson, Sr., age 81, passed away Wednesday, March 11, 2026 at Annie Penn Hospital.
Public viewing will begin on Sunday, March 15, 2026 from 12 until 6 p.m. at McLaurin-Harris Funeral Home, 721 East Morehead Street, Reidsville, NC.
Funeral services will be held Monday, March 16, 2026 from the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 7236 US Hwy 29 Business, Reidsville, NC. Visitation with the family will begin at 1:30 p.m., followed by the service at 2 p.m. Dr. Joel Clark will officiate and Pastor William C. Hairston, eulogist.
The committal and interment with military honors performed by the United States Navy Honor Guard will follow in Greenveiw Cemetery, Reidsville, NC.
Deacon Walter Johnson, Sr., affectionately called "Pap" was born in Reidsville, NC on December 22, 1944 to the late Ralph Albert Johnson and Nancy Jane Page Johnson.
He was educated in the local public schools where he graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, class of 1962. He received an associates degree in Business Administration from Jefferson College in Greensboro, NC.
At an early age, he joined in holy matrimony with the late Alberta Crawford Johnson.
Deacon Johnson served his country faithfully and was honorably discharged from the United States Navy.
He was an avid fisherman and according to him, he was the best fisherman in Rockingham County. He was a diehard Pittsburgh Steelers and Atlanta Braves fan. In his spare time, he loved watching westerns.
He retired from the City of Reidsville Sanitation Department after 30 years of service. He was also a co-owner of Yellow Flash Taxi Company.
Deacon Johnson was a dedicated member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church where he sang in the male chorus and was instrumental in building the new church.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, George Johnson, Roosevelt Johnson, Joe Johnson, Lewis Johnson, Lawrence Edward Johnson and Ralph William Johnson; sisters, Pearl Howard and Cora Lee Johnson.
Survivors include children, Walter Johnson, Jr., Shaun Johnson, Orlando Johnson (Shawntane); sister, Mary Alice Harrison; 7 grandchildren, 7 great-great grandchildren and 2 great-great-great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
