Deacon George
A. Watt
Dec 14, 1944 — Mar 6, 2020
Deacon George A. Watt passed on Friday evening at Annie Penn Hospital in Reidsville, North Carolina. Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M., Thursday, March 12, 2020 at Grooms Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, Reidsville, NC, with a visitation 12:30-1:00 P.M. prior to the service and burial to take place in the Grooms Church Cemetery.
In the afternoon hours of Friday, March 6, 2020, the Angel of Heaven came to the home at 611 W. Harrison Street, Reidsville, North Carolina, with loving hands, and stilled the voice of George Andrew Watt, Jr. His soul winged its flight from the world of sin, sorrow and pain to a place of eternal rest.
He was born on December 14, 1944 to the late George Watt, Sr., and Elizabeth Lawson Watt and spent the majority of his life in Reidsville, NC and vicinity. Preceding him in death was his son, George Wesley Watt.
He was a lifelong and devoted member of Grooms Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as an Usher, Adult Sunday School Teacher, Chair of the Board of Deacons, Secretary of the Male Chorus, Secretary of the Senior Saints and also served as a Senior Saints Van Driver. Deacon Watt's favorite scripture was Psalm 121:1-2, "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth."
Deacon Watt was also a member of the Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Association, Inc. He served as a Property Manager, Member of the Executive Board, President of Cedar Grove Ushers Association #1 and Member of the General Board and Alternate on the Registration Committee. He was also very supportive of the Cluster #4 Joint Sunday School on the 5th Sunday.
He was educated in the public schools of Rockingham County – Lincoln Elementary, Roosevelt Elementary and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1963. He also attended Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, NC. He was employed at Thompson-Arthur Paving Company in Greensboro, NC for 36 years, from August 24, 1970 until he retired on December 9, 2006. He retired as the company's Safety Director.
Deacon Watt was well known for "taking pictures" all over and we do mean, Lottie, Dottie, and everybody! Whether you said "yes" or not, there was no such thing as "you can't take my picture"! He would just take it anyway. In addition to loving his family, he was also an ardent fan of war movies, fishing, driving, EATING, pampering his pet "Drew" and attending holiday functions with family and friends.
He leaves to treasure precious memories of his life: beloved and devoted wife, Loretta Marie Watt, of the home; three sisters, Mary E. Stevens, of Greensboro, NC, Ellen Malinda Smiley, of Richmond, VA, and Elizabeth W. Colson, of Newport News, VA; one brother, Wlliam Harvey Watt, of Richmond, VA; daughter-in-law, Kimberly Parker Watt; other relatives and friends.
McLaurin Funeral Home is serving the family.
