Annie Elizabeth Hodnett Bass, the eldest daughter of the late Herman and Addie Mae Hill Hodnett, was born on April 24, 1924 in Reidsville, North Carolina. Following a brief illness, she departed this life on Wednesday morning, August 26, 2020.
A lifelong resident of Reidsville, she was educated in the public schools of Rockingham County until she married Henry J. Bass, her soul mate. Annie and Henry spent over 53 years in Holy Matrimony which ended with his death in 1992. This union produced seven children and one adopted daughter, all whom have nurtured and loved her immensely.
Dedicated to her growing family, Annie worked in the home for many years. She began working outside of the home to earn money to pay for music lessons and other extras for the children. She always had a love for working with hair and pursued a career in Cosmetology, attending Maaco Beauty School in Greensboro, NC. Upon earning her Cosmetology license, she worked in Ida's Beauty Shop on Market Street, "The Block", until she moved her business, Ann's Beauty Shop, into the basement of her home, where she worked until retirement.
A faithful and devoted member of First Baptist Church, during her life she sang in the Senior Choir, worked in the Sunday school, BTU, missionary leader for Group #1 and member of missionary Group 1-4-5. Annie was also known for her delicious yams she prepared for many church events. Until the pandemic, she could always be found in her favorite seat every Sunday morning. She loved God, her family, her church and in return, she was loved by all.
Annie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Abbey McNair, brother Herman Hodnett Jr, and loving daughter, Gloria B. Walker.
As the matriarch of the Hodnett family, she leaves to cherish her memory: six children - William H. Bass, of Reidsville, NC, Addie B. Spence (Luther), of Maywood, IL, Sterling C.
